It was the first time in 3 years we have stayed in Memphis for the 4th of July. As we started to search for the normal 4th of July activities we found out that #1- there is no parade ANYWHERE nearby and #2- The fireworks in Bartlett were on Saturday July 2nd and Memphis's show was on Sunday July 3rd. Needless to say we were pretty disappointed in staying and Justin claimed on Facebook that Memphis was not American because of their lack of 4th of July activities..... however, we got creative and found some fun ways to celebrate all weekend long. We ended up having a great time.
Friday evening we found a little "bike" parade in a small town called Hernando, MS. Basically it was a chance for the kids to ride in a parade around the town square. After the short parade they had a movie on the lawn of the city hall. It was a really fun town full of Southern hospitality.
We had fun decorating the boys bikes
Saturday night we headed over to meet some friends at the Redbirds game. They had their great firework show after the game. The ball game atmosphere never disappoints.
For some reason, no matter where we go, Jackson seems to find an older kid to become friends. He doesn't care about the kids his age, he likes those older elementary school children. This kid was really sweet with him and let him tag along with him. We all joked that this guy was initiating him into his "gang", but really he was a sweet kid. He introduced himself to me, told me his name, and always came up to me to ask if it was okay for him to sit with him or take him to the play area. (and don't worry... we had an eye on him the whole time)
Monday we had a BBQ with some friends and let the kids play in the sprinklers and kiddie pool in their backyard. I made these festive 4th of July jello cups. They were delish.
After hanging out with them we headed to another town in MS that actually held their firework show on the actual holiday. We weren't sure where they set the fireworks off at but we ended up picking the perfect spot and were one of the closest to launch site.
Jackson loved the fireworks. Jonah cried at first until I started making all sorts of "ohhs and awwws" and "boom!! This is so fun!!!" type comments. He was then mesmerized only if I had him in my arms.

Sounds like you had fun but in my humble but right opinion Winnebago is still THE BEST!!! place to celebrate the 4th of JULY...just sayin' :)

Holidays with the family are so fun. Glad to see you back blogging again. I love the new look! Keep up the good work. Justin made a sweet tribute to his grandma. Grandmas are special.
